We are currently studying Bikkurim and are about to complete Seder Zeraim - a journey of nearly 8 years. In just a couple of months, we will begin Seder Moed, focusing on the holidays. Open to all levels - no prior background in Hebrew or Jewish learning required. David Jacobs has been learning and teaching Mishna and Gemara for many years, and warmly invites new participants.

If I am not for myself, who is for me? But if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when? (m. Avot 1:14) This timeless saying of Hillel is just one example of the moral clarity and spiritual challenge offered in Pirkei Avot, the unique tractate of Mishnah devoted entirely to the ethical teachings of Talmudic Sages. In this course, we will engage in a deep and reflective study of Pirkei Avot’s teachings, exploring not only the text’s wisdom but also the personalities, historical context, and philosophical underpinnings behind the aphorisms. Along the way, we will ask: What is the nature of Jewish wisdom? How have Jews across generations engaged with Avot in shaping moral character and communal norms?
