The Life and Afterlife of a Musar Masterpiece Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzato's Mesilat Yesharim

5 Wednesdays from 7:45pm-8:45pm
January 12, 19, 26 & February 2, 9

In the late 19th Century, Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, founder of the modern Musar Movement in Eastern Europe, chose Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzatto (RaMChaL)’s Mesilat Yesharim as the foundational text of his curriculum for Jewish religious ethical aspiration (Musar). Indeed, Mesilat Yesharim continues to be celebrated as a core religious text in Yeshivot and Seminaries worldwide. How interesting then that its 18th-century Italian rabbinical author was a philosopher, kabbalist, poet, and playwright, who had messianic pretensions, and whose works were burned as heretical by his antagonists.

In this course, we will study Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzatto (RaMChaL)’s life story - his education, writings, travels, and controversies. Most importantly, though, we will study his enduring literary legacy and discover why Mesilat Yesharim remains a Musar classic worthy of our study.

Register via Ma'ayan here.

Uncovering the Seder Plate

5 Wednesdays from 7:45pm-8:45pm
March 2, 9, 23, 30 & April 6

In this class, we will focus each of our five sessions on different symbolic foods of the Seder Plate. We will study the biblical and talmudic origins for each item, their halakhic obligations, as well as their meanings developed over the history of commentary on the Haggadah. By the end of the course, participants will be “full” of information and inspiration to share at their Pesach seders.
