What do you do each day?

Rabbi Benjamin Samuels

What do you do each day? Of course, we all eat, sleep, and care for ourselves and our family. If we are students in school, we study; if we are in our work years, we work; if we are retired, we have choices to make regarding how to fill our time. There has never, however, been a time that I can recall more Jewish choices for all of us - students, workers, retirees - about what we can Jewishly do each day. Certainly, daily davening continues, and we would love to see more men and women, adults and children, frequent our daily and Shabbat minyanim. If you have been away from Shul or an infrequent returnee, perhaps there are Covid-safe ways for you to rejoin our minyanim. But, my focus here is to highlight all the daily study options that abound: Daf Yomi, Mishnah Yomi, TaNaKh Yomi, Mishneh Torah Yomi, Mishneh Berurah Yomi. With internet resources, podcasting, other social media, most available straight from our smartphones, being koveah itim - setting aside daily fixed times for study - has never been easier. Our parashah continues the construction of the Mishkan, its sacred furnishings, ritual objects, and priestly vestments. The hallmark of the Mishkan and later the Beit HaMikdash is not their grandeur or holy haute couture, but the daily service offered on behalf of the people of Israel, creating close connection with the Holy One blessed be God, day in day out. So, let me return to our opening question, what do you plan to do each day?

Shabbat Shalom, Rav Benjie
