Rabbi Moses Nachmanides – Ramban (1194-1270) – Medieval Spanish Biblical and Talmud Commentator, popularizer of kabbalah, communal leader, defender of the faith, builder of Tzion – left Jewish posterity a magisterial corpus of Torah commentary that is well respected for its broad and deep insightful analysis. In this course, we will study how related fragments from Nachmanides’ Torah commentary join together to form larger coherent frames of Jewish thought.
Topics will include: 1. An introduction to Ramban’s Method of Parshanut and Mysticism; 2. Adam and Eve’s Fall in Eden; 3. Determinism and Voluntarism in Jewish History; 4. Natural Law and Miraculous Providence; 5. Love of God and Religious Experience; 6. Ramban’s Theory of Body and Soul in Exile and Return, in this world and the world-to-come.
